Associated Breathing Excercise:

The Belly Bounce
: Breathe in slowly for 20-30 seconds expanding your lungs to full capacity.  Slowly let the air out in small puffs with your lips forming a small "O." As you exhale, use your diaphragm and stomach muscles to bounce the air in and out of your mouth.  This exercise will help in the quick air direction changes needed for these lightning-fast licks.

If your lungs start to burn, you're doing it right!

Recommended Reading:

Sheet Music for the "Four" Album with harp solos transcribed by Winslow Xer
xa.  Accompany this read with serious listens to the album's hit singles "Hook" and "RunAround."  These songs, believe it or not, have some of the simpler licks that John Popper plays.  Start with "Hook," and work your way towards the note blizzardry of "Fallible."
A La John Popper of "Blues Traveler"

A La "Sugar Blue"

Suggested Listening:

The best way to learn a lot of Popper's licks is to listen to them repeatedly and try to mimick them. These Albums are currently available for purchase.

Sugar Blue is one of the best harpists I've ever heard.  His music doesn't come with the reknown of John Popper's Blues Traveler Band, but his harp licks leave nothing lacking. His two releases, "In Your Eyes" and "Blue Blazes" show that Blue not only has lightning speed, but SOUL.  His distorted sound compliments his wizardry on the harp.  You'll wonder how a harp can "sound like that!"

Suggested Listening:           "In Your Eyes"   and                 "Blue Blazes."
